A Little Love from Our State Magazine and Mast General Store

Our Damascus Pit Master hand-forged cleaver got a little love from Our State Magazine and Mast General Store yesterday. We entered it in the Made In NC contest this year, and while we didn't win the big prize, we were one of the Mast General Store's Home and Garden favorites.

Hand-forged by Master Bladesmith E. Scott McGhee out of 1095/15n20 pattern welded steel
made by E. Scott McGhee. Yep, he made the steel, then he forged the cleaver.

Scott prefers organic and flowing Damascus steel patterns
that match his organic and flowing functional tool designs.

He even made a special leather jacket for this Pit Master.

Thanks for looking! To see Scott's work in person,
come see us in the Village of Yesteryear at the 2019 NC State Fair.

Zulu Meets the Chief

Scott does a lot of hand-forging (no power hammer involved) when teaching introductory bladesmithing classes. Generally he finishes at least one knife during the class, but a few rough-forged blades always get completed at a later date. During his June Intro to Bladesmithing class at the Virginia Institute of Blacksmithing, Scott forged a Zulu/Chief - a knife with a blade like our popular Zulu model but the size of our Chief (i.e. a large hunter).

Zulu/Chief
Steel: Hand-forged 1075
Blade: 5.125 inches (from tip to guard)
Overall Length: 10.5 inches
Guard: Bronze w/black coved & bronze spacer
Handle: Desert Ironwood
Sheath: Tooled leather drop

She's a beautiful and functional tool . . .

. . . that comes with a quality crafted, hand-tooled leather sheath.

Made by ABS Master Bladesmith, E. Scott McGhee,
this is a piece of functional art that can be enjoyed for generations.

Brut de Forge in BB-55 Teak

On June 13th, 1940 (79 years ago today), the Battleship USS North Carolina (aka BB-55) was first launched. The ship fought in every significant battle in the pacific during WWII. It was decommissioned in June of 1947 and was ultimately dedicated as a North Carolina Memorial in 1962. The memorial ship is located in Wilmington, not far from our home. In 1983, the original decking was replaced, and last year Scott obtained several original pieces. It took a lot of seaching and proper cutting to find good handle stock in all that wood, but he found quite a few and some even had curl in it like the ones on the Brut de Forge Bowie pictured below.

The teak was stabilized for use on knives. You have to rock the handle back and forth to truly appreciate the curl, but it's there and is truly stunning on this hand-forged blade.

Brut de Forge Bowie
Steel: Hand-forged 1075
Finish: Hammer-marked and hand-sanded
Overall Length: 15 inches
Blade Length: 9 inches
Handle: Curly Teak from BB-55
Bolsters: Nickel-silver
Sheath: Leather drop
*Blade has fully sharpened clip
