What does the wife of a ABS journeyman bladesmith get for her birthday and Valentine's Day?
Anything she wants, of course. And this year I asked for a spear.
Scott forged the blade from 5160 tool steel, and it withstood multiple throws at a long-leaf pine stump without damage. The shaft did not hold up so great, however, as Scott shaped it from a rake handle he bought at Big Blue. It shattered after several throws, but that didn't stop us. We ripped out the shaft and tried it out as a throwing blade . . . which was even more fun! Scott has promised to refit the spear with a hickory shaft and make me a throwing knife to boot. Now that's a deal!
