The Buta II - A Lightweight Skinner

Scott has begun finishing the knives he made at his ABS class last month. The Buta II, a lightweight skinner, was the first to be completed. Buta is Japanese for pig. The Buta II is a hand-forged skinner cord wrapped in the Japanese style. This knife is reminiscent of our retired Buta design, but is much beefier, curvier and comes with our hammer-marked "rustic" finish. The Buta II was designed to be a skinner, but would also make an excellent everyday cary. This Buta II comes standard with a black Kydex sheath and weighs 8.1 ounces - sheath included. This knife is also a natural candidate for a GHF Kydex shoulder holster. Add the shoulder holster rig to your purchase for an additional $65.

Steel: Hand-forged 1084
Handle: Hardened cord-wrapped
Finish: "Rustic" (hammer marked and belt sanded to 65 microns)
Overall Length: 7 3/4inches
Blade Length: 3 1/4 inches
Weight: 5.2 ounces; 8.1 ounces with Kydex sheath
Sheath: Kydex (black or green)
Price: $250

This Buta II was forged out of 1084 tool steel. Scott is currently working on version forged out of 5160.

Bladesmithing Class

Scott just returned from a 2-week bladesmithing class at Haywood Community College in Clyde, NC with ABS Master Bladesmiths Jason Knight and Burt Foster.  He had a great time, learned a ton, managed to bang out several knives and is now a year closer to becoming an ABS Journeyman bladesmith. Some of the knives were destroyed during class to examine grain structure and test for evidence of proper heat treating. Below are the knives that Scott will be finishing in the coming weeks. If you see any that you might be interested in, email us to discuss handle, finish options and pricing.

The fire marshall shut down the school's gas fired forges the week before the class so the students worked over coal.

ABS Journeyman and aspiring mastersmith Adam DesRosiers demonstrated his talents at the forge during the class.

ABS Master Jason Knight fell in love with Scott's "Bushman" knife and new shoulder holster rig. Jason went home with new toys stamped Guinea Hog Forge, which made Scott feel really proud. Below Jason demonstrates the quick draw technique.

The Swamp Fox

Meet the Swamp Fox, Scott's latest creation. It is a regal, but vicious weapon reminiscent of the gentleman warrior of the Revolutionary War for whom it is named - Francis Marion (aka "The Swamp Fox"). This knife is tough enough for everyday use, but stylish enough to be worn anywhere.

Hand-forged out of 5160 tool steel
Hand-shaped nickle-silver bolsters and pins
Dyed stabilized curly maple handle (ergonomically shaped)
Stamped and dyed custom black leather sheath
10 inches overall; 5 1/4 inch blade length

Knife Shoulder Holster

Scott likes to wear bib overalls during the cooler months, but has been frustrated about where to carry his knife on his bibs. To address the issue, Scott designed and built a knife shoulder holster.

This version attaches to a button on the right side of the bibs, but with a quick strap change the knife shoulder holster can be threaded over a belt and worn with pants. This way you can carry your knife discretely under a jacket.

The Kydex portion of the holster is attached to the Kydex sheath with a single Chicago screw so the knife and sheath can be easily removed from the holster and reclipped to a belt.
Buy a Guinea Hog Forge knife and Scott can built you a custom leather or Kydex shoulder holster.

From Bantam to Bushman

Meet "The Bushman" - Scott's new EDC (everyday carry).

Hand forged out of 5160 tool steel
Recurved blade
Cord wrapped handle plasticized for durability
Kydex sheath
Total length - 10 inches; blade length - 5 1/4 inches
Weight with sheath  - 9.1 ounces; knife only - 5.7 ounces

Scott is an arborist, and he hand-forged the Bushman to be his new work knife. For over a year Scott has carried a knife we call The Bantam with him to work. Tree climbing, prying off bark, digging in trees, cutting rope, laying in the dirt, sweat, sweat and more sweat have put a lot of miles on the Bantam, but the knife has handled it fabulously. It's a bit stained and pitted, but the Bantam still out performs any knife Scott has ever owned. And while the Bantam is still a great knife, after a year of producing hand-forged knives for others, Scott started craving something new - something a bit more graceful.

Wow, what a difference a year makes!

The Bushman is very strong and very light (5.7 ounces without the sheath), has a recurved blade and a hammer-marked finish. At home being banged around in a tree or ground into the dirt, this knife is as rugged as a bushman of the Kalahari. Now if you dropped one of these out of an airplane into the bush, the native who found it would probably be pleased and not assume that The Gods Must Be Crazy.
