The Art of Teaching Knifemaking

Scott loves sharing the art of knifemaking, especially when a student is capable of going from a hand-forged blade to a finished knife in just 2 1/2 days.

From the power hammer to the grinder - two knives rough-forged and ready for heat treat.  The student's knife is at the top of the picture and a demo knife by Scott McGhee is at the bottom.

Ahh, the art of hand-sanding - torture or meditation, you decide.

Work'in on the handle at the Wilmont grinder.

Knife sanding yoga? Working on handles leads to some interesting positions.

Meet the Creek Chub by Scott Gallagher. The man clearly has skills.
Keep an eye out for more knives from this talented guy.

Happy Belated Thanksgiving

We hope you and yours had a great Thanksgiving. We celebrated with family and friends cooking in a 1700's style colonial kitchen that Scott's parents build with their own hands and stocked with antique cookware they've collected for years. We enjoy the kitchen every chance we get, and the few kitchen utensils that aren't antiques were hand-forged by Scott.

The prize of the collection is a 300 year old reflector oven.

The centerpiece of the meal was a rib-eye roast.

Inside the kitchen

Hurricane Fran hit NC hard in 1996 downing a lot of trees on their property, so Ralph and Peggy bought a portable sawmill and "made lemonade out of lemons".

Cooked to perfection and carved with a Guinea Hog Forge blade.

It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without sweet potato pie.

Happy Holidays from our family to yours.

Vigilante: Old World Sword, New World Flair

Scott spent last week taking a sword class with Sam Salvati. Vigilante - an Old World sword with New World flair - was born in that class. Scott still needs to figure out what type of permanent handle she'll get, but Vigilante is battle worthy and will be auctioned off in the near future - #BlackSwordAuction

Vigilante
Steel: Hand-Forged 1084
Finish: Draw filed and Parkerized
Overall Length: 35.75 inches
Blade Length: 29.25
Handle: TBD

Scott added a temporary handle for pictures and testing. Vigilante will ultimately get either an all wire-wrapped handle or one with wire over black leather.

Scott hand-forged the blade out of 1084 and peened the mild-steel guard in place. He added additional peen marks for a decorative effect.

The entire blade was also draw-filed by hand (Sam wouldn't allow anyone to use a grinder on the blade), and Scott decided draw-filing metal was a Medieval form of torture. He managed to turn torture into art by creating a feather pattern with the file marks.

The blade was forged out of 1084. Check out the bar stock vs. the forged blade.

With guard and pommel added, the entire sword weighed only 2 lbs 11 oz.

Scott chose to Parkerize his entire sword to give it a wicked finish
that protects the blade from corrosion.

The protective finish came in handy when testing the sword on pineapples.

Distal taper plus proper heat treat equals . . .

The sword also has an armor-piercing point for penetrating hardened targets.

Scott and Sam Salvati - master sword maker. Everyone clearly had a good time.

Four out of six swords made in Sam Salvati's class.

We'll post more pictures once the sword is complete
and announce the date of the auction at that time.

Thanks for looking.
